Murdoch Day is held every June in Redruth and is one of three festivals the town celebrates each year. A community festival, it is named after one of Redruth’s former residents: the famous Scottish inventor William Murdoch.

Despite being a pioneer of steam power, Murdoch is best remembered for the development of gas lighting, which had a massive effect on people’s lives across the world.

Murdoch Day contains entertainment including a children’s dance and art procession, all day music and entertainment, a street market, “old tyme” fair, exhibitions and a variety of live concerts and other events round the town. The main procession of the day, which features many of the children of the town, is the 10am procession. At 3pm the town celebrates with a “community dance”. This is an example of the type of celebration dances that are common at community and traditional festivals in Cornwall.
