Degol Stul is an annual celebration of the Nos Lowen: a kind of Cornish dance and music. Nos Lowen, called “Happy Night” in the Cornish language, is a simplified form of Cornish dance based on the similar Fest Noz celebrations held in Brittany.

Many of the dances in Nos Lowen are circle or serpent dances. A circle dance is any dance that is performed by creating a circle as part of the performance. In serpent dances, people form a long chain by holding hands.

Nos Lowen music and rhythms are also influenced by the sounds of the Cornish language. Many of Cornwall's best known traditional music groups, including Dalla, are from the Nos Lowen tradition. Degol Stul is the Cornish name for Twelfth Night (the last evening of Christmas) and during this celebration there are 12 bands performing. During the day leading up to the celebration, there are a number of music and dance workshops and other performances, and a procession through the nearby area.
