August

Where?

Newlyn

Newlyn Fish Festival is held on August bank holiday every year in the Cornish fishing port of Newlyn. During the festival, the entire harbour area of the village is shut off and filled with stalls selling all sorts of goods. You can also find demonstrations of the traditional skills that were once part of the fishing industry in Cornwall.

One of the most interesting demonstrations is the creation of crab pots, which are made by weaving of two kinds of willow (a bendy wood) together. The pots are extremely complicated and it takes a great deal of skill to learn how to make them. There are also demonstrations of fish cookery by local chefs and a wide range of fish for sale.
